Data URIs — files inlined as text

A data URI embeds a file’s bytes directly in a URL: data:[mime];base64,[payload]. It removes an HTTP request, which suits small icons and CSS-referenced assets. Base64 inflates the payload by about a third (3 bytes become 4 characters), so large files grow page weight; browsers also do not cache data URIs separately from the page.
