Scheme 12: ASCII Code Encoding
ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange) assigns a unique numeric code to each character. Standard ASCII covers 0–127: control characters (0–31), printable characters (32–126), and DEL (127).
Extended ASCII (128–255) covers international characters, symbols, and accented letters (ISO 8859-1 / Windows-1252).

What is ASCII?

ASCII (first published 1963) is a 7-bit code: 128 code points, 0–127, and below 128 every charset in the world agrees on what the bytes mean. “Extended ASCII” (128–255) is not one standard — that upper half depends on the code page in use (Latin-1, Windows-1252, GBK, Shift-JIS), which is exactly why this page has an encoding selector.

A “text to ASCII” conversion is really “text to bytes”: below 128 the answer is fixed, above it the same character honestly converts to different numbers under different code pages — pick the encoding your target system uses.
