Offsets and endianness

Every byte in a file has an offset — its distance from the start, shown in a hex editor’s left gutter. Multi-byte values read differently depending on endianness: the same 4 bytes are one number in big-endian order and another in little-endian, which is why editors let you choose before interpreting.

Patching bytes at the wrong offset corrupts executables silently — always patch a copy and keep the original.
