XLSX vs XLS — what the file format means

An .xlsx file is a ZIP archive of XML files (the Office Open XML format): one XML part describes each worksheet, another holds the shared strings, and styles live in their own part. That open, well-documented structure is why this page can open, edit and re-save workbooks entirely in your browser. The older .xls format is a single binary file (BIFF) from the Excel 97 era — it can still be opened here, but .xlsx is the smaller, better-supported choice for new work.

.xlsx = ZIP + XML (Office Open XML, the Excel default since 2007); .xls = binary BIFF (Excel 97). For server-side conversion between formats use the Excel Converter.
